An armed gang murdered an advocate in broad daylight near Narayanapuram Krishnan Koil here in Oomachikulam police station limits on Friday.

Police said that Muthudurai (36), son of Veerapandi, who was proceeding to the High Court on his two-wheeler was intercepted by an armed gang at 9.30 a.m.

Within minutes, the gang attacked him and he fell down. According to eye-witness accounts, the killers ensured that Muthudurai had died and then they fled from the scene of crime. Preliminary inquiries revealed that Muthudurai was on conditional bail in connection with a murder case reported in Sankarankoil, Tirunelveli district. Figuring as A-1 in the case, he had to sign before the Station House Officer, Anna Nagar police station daily at 5 p.m., as a part of the bail condition.

Police said that Muthudurai had allegedly murdered one Shanmugasundaram, who was working with him as an advocate’s clerk. They both had jointly purchased a four-wheeler some time back and there was a dispute of ownership. Police suspect that in a bid to take revenge, Shanmugasundaram’s relatives may have committed the crime and are on the look out for the killers. Special teams have been formed and Oomachikulam police have registered a case of murder. In one more murder on Friday, an AIADMK volunteer, Alagarsamy of TNHB Colony in Mela Anuppanadi, was hacked to death by a four-member gang on East Veli Street. The motive is not known. A sniffer dog was brought to the spot to track the culprits.
