In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old man stabbed an 18-year-old girl to death on Friday morning at Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli (East). The accused, who tried to flee from the scene of the crime, was apprehended after he was chased down by an autorickshaw driver and then overpowered by a constable on duty in the area.

About the accused and the victim
According to the Vikhroli police, the arrested accused, Haroon Sheikh, lived in a slum on Lokhande Marg in Govandi. He worked at a stall that sold eggs and bread, the stall was located near the victim Afsana Mohammed Mumtaz Choudhary's, 18, residence.

Why did he attack the girl?
For the last few months, Sheikh has been trying to woo Choudhary and had expressed his desire to marry her. However, Choudhary had rejected the proposal as she was aware that her parents would never agree to it. In spite of the rejection, Sheikh had continued to hound Choudhary for the past one month.

What happened?
On Friday morning, when Choudhary was going to the common toilet located near the 90 Feet Road in Tagore Nagar, Sheikh blocked her way and stabbed her multiple times with a knife he had carried along. "The victim had eight wounds on her body. Sheikh had also slashed her neck, which caused her death," said Dinesh Desai, senior inspector, Vikhroli police station.
The victim was immediately taken to Rajawadi hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

How was the accused nabbed?
After stabbing Choudhary, Sheikh ran from the spot. It took a moment for the stunned locals nearby to react, but soon they started shouting after Sheikh. "An autorickshaw driver, Mohammed, was passing by and saw Sheikh running just ahead of him with his pant soaked in blood. He chased Sheikh in his rickshaw and, when he saw constable Balkrishna Nandeodkar at the chowk, shouted out to him to nab Sheikh. Nandeodkar immediately overpowered Sheikh and recovered the knife in a plastic bag and then brought him to the police station," Desai said.

In custody
The police said Sheikh has been booked for murder and sent to police custody. Further investigations are on.
