BRIEF: Sacramento Zoo chief Mary Healy dies [The Sacramento Bee :: ]

(Sacramento Bee (CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Aug. 08--Mary Healy, executive director and chief executive officer of the Sacramento Zoo, died Thursday while traveling to the Galapagos Islands, officials said. She was 61.

Healy had left a port in Ecuador when she suffered a cerebral aneurysm, according to a written statement from the zoo. She was later declared brain dead, the statement said.

Healy joined the Sacramento Zoo in 1999. She oversaw the construction of a full-scale veterinary hospital at the zoo and renovations of habitats for many animals, including lemurs, giant anteaters, giraffes and red pandas.

In addition to chairing the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, she was president of the California Association of Zoos and Aquariums and was one of nine international council members for the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Last year, she was honored with a Women Who Mean Business Award by the Sacramento Business Journal.

A memorial is being planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sacramento Zoological Society.
