INDORE: With an aim to spread awareness about harmful effects of tobacco among school students, Nanhe Farishtey, an NGO working for health and education of children, organized an anti-tobacco campaign 'Tambaku: abhi nahi, kabhi nahi' on Thursday.
More than 7,500 students from schools of Indore took oath against the use of tobacco. State health minister Narottam Mishra was the chief guest at the event, who educated students about ill-effects of tobacco consumption.
Mishra said, "Madhya Pradesh was the first state to impose a ban on 'gutka' and we will also try to ban cigarettes in our state." He said the state government has also asked reports from laboratories on mouth-fresheners and 'pan masala' without tobacco, and if found harmful, a ban will be imposed on them as well.
A video regarding harmful effects of consuming gutka, cigarettes and other forms of tobacco was also showcased.
Later, former All India Radio announcer BN Bose, guided students about ill-effects of tobacco and to inform seniors or parents if they find their friends or family members consuming tobacco. "Tobacco is an addictive substance which not only weakens the body but also dulls the sense, thereby destroying future of an individual," said Bose. Junior Indian Idol fame Debanjana Karmakar sung Nahne Farishtey's anthem 'Say no to tobacco' on the occasion.
