Comedy in Marathi cinema has changed over the years. The new trend is reflected in the recently-released Poshter Boyz. Debutant director, Sameer Patil has succeeded in giving a strong social message, albeit laced with humour. Besides, the taut script aided the smooth flow of narrative, and Patil was effective in inflecting just the right amount of sermonising, without really sounding preachy. Excellent performances by the three main protagonists helped in taking the story ahead.
The story unfolds through Jagan Deshmukh (Dilip Prabha-valkar), Sadanand Kulkarni (Hrishikesh Joshi) and Arjun Jagtap (Aniket Vishwasrao) who live in a small village, Vadner in Maharashtra. Deshmukh is a senior citizen with a daughter of marriageable age, Kulkarni is a teacher and Arjun is a young lad in love with a local girl. The trio find themselves unwittingly embroiled in a situation because of an advertisement on vasectomy. When the local family planning department paste these ads in their village, they have to face the ire of their family and friends.
They become the brunt of many jokes and find themselves in several funny situations . The humour in the film is largely situational and exaggarated. but the taut screenplay and direction helps in keeping the audience riveted in anticipation of what comic turn the next frame would bring. In a humourous manner, Patil has achieved in highlighting the problems faced by the common man when dealing with government bureaucracy. The film also manages to break myths about family planning and sterilisation. The actors have done a marvellous job, and with the slick direction by Patil, the movie has struck the right chord. Without resorting to cheap gimmicks, the film sends out a strong social message.
