Regina Mayor Michael Fougere is asking the unions representing city employees to come back to the bargaining table to reach a deal on the civic pension plan deficit.

About 7,000 current and retired workers are in danger of losing their current pension plan if changes aren't made to address a $290 million funding shortfall.

Saskatchewan’s superintendent of pensions is considering ending the plan, and has given the two sides until the end of the year to reach a deal.

No formal talks have been held on the issue since April.

The mayor says negotiations must resume soon in order to save employee pensions.
