Tirunelveli: The village of Idinthakarai, which was at the centre of the anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) movement, vowed to continue its struggle for a nuclear- free world as it paid homage on Wednesday to the over 1.40 lakh people killed by the dropping of the atom bomb on Hiroshima 69 years ago this day and in Nagasaki three days later.
Over a 1,000 men, women and students who took out a rally to mark the 69th Hiroshima Day,’ lit candles in the grounds of the St Lourdes church to pay homage to the victims of the holocaust.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr S P Udayakumar, who was in the forefront of the anti-KKNPP movement, claimed their struggle continued with the same vigour and he and his associates were trying hard to strengthen and take it forward.
The activist demanded scrapping of the agreement signed between Russia and India on the third and fourth units of KKNPP and an independent scientific inquiry into the problems the first two units were experiencing.
Dr Udayakumar’s arrival in the village seemed to infuse the people who have continued with their anti-KKNPP struggle through a village committee and a women’s group, with renewed enthusiasm to pursue it.
While he was accompanied by many of his associates, one of the close aides, M Pushparayan, could not participate in the rally at Idinthakarai for health reasons.
