Owing to poor turnout, BEST to end its Metro ferry service

The airport ferry runs AC bus services to Borivali, Belapur and Thane between 8.30 pm and 2.30 am everyday.

Facing an extremely poor turnout of passengers for its ferry or round trips started from the new terminal at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and for Metro stations, cash-strapped Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) has decided to shut down the ferry services.

While it will permanently shut down ferry services for Metro stations, the one at the airport is likely to be resumed after Dusshera. The announcement was made after the BEST general manager pointed out that the services were hardly used by
passengers.

An average of three passengers per trip in the airport air-conditioned ferry services were reported last month. On the Metro route, BEST has found only 10-15 passengers per trip, unlike the estimated 40-45. BEST commenced two Metro ferries to transport passengers along the Metro station to far-off areas like MIDC, SEEPZ, Lokhandwala complex and Adarsh Nagar, among others.

A BEST spokesperson said while Metro ferry services would be discontinued permanently, the one at the airport would be started after Dusshera. The spokesperson added that BEST would ask airport authorities to publicise the ferry services.
