Cops likely to give clean chit to Niranjan Hiranandani in sexual assault case

The Mumbai police, which is investigating the allegation of rape levelled against senior inspector of Powai police station YL Jadhav, and two local goons at the behest of Niranjan Hiranandani, managing director of Hiranandani Developers, is all set to give Hiranandani a clean chit in the case.

On June 12, a 28-year-old woman had moved a petition in the Bombay high court claiming that she was gang-raped by Jadhav and two other – Prakash Wadkar and Sanjay Sansare, at a community shrine in Powai on June 14. She had also alleged that Sansare had threatened the residents of Jai Bhim Nagar, Powai, to vacate their slums at the behest of Hiranandani, as she refused to evict the land, the three allegedly raped her. The victim also alleged that Hiranandani was responsible for destroying the evidences.

The high court on June 24, ordered the Mumbai crime branch to investigate the case and also directed the police to register an FIR. Accordingly the police lodged an FIR against eight persons, including Jadhav, Wadkar and Sansare.

During the investigation, the police suspect that the victim was illegally residing on the land that belonged to the company, which is owned by the Hiranandani group. An officer from crime branch, said, "During our investigation, we came to know that the land was illegally occupied by the victim. The victim had given names of the witnesses, who she had claimed were present in the area and had seen the accused having an argument with her outside the shrine. But nobody has corroborated her claims and neither have they testified against the accused".

He further added, "The victim alleged that she and her family members were assaulted, and three of her family members took treatment at a state-run government hospital. However, she had submitted the medical reports of a private clinic". According to the police, the medical test conducted on the victim after the FIR also came to be inconclusive
