Pune: The release of water from Mulshi dam resulted in water gushing into slums and landmarks along Mula river on Tuesday.
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) moved 90 families from Mulanagar in Sangvi to a nearby municipal school while around 40 families in Dapodi and Bopkhel shifted to their relatives' houses.
Omprakash Bahiwal, co-ordinator of the disaster management cell, said, "Areas from Wakad to Bopkhel were affected due to release of dam water on Monday afternoon.
Teams of the disaster management cell, fire, health, electrical and other civic departments worked overnight to help people move out of the flood zones."
The crematorium at Kaspatevasti in Wakad was flooded while water entered some houses in Madhuban society in Sangvi. Eight families were evacuated from Gulabnagar in Dapodi and shifted to Hutatma Bhagat Singh municipal school in Dapodi. The people, however, preferred to stay in their relatives' houses. About 30 homes went under water in Ramnagar area of Bopkhel. The discharge from Mulshi dam was reduced to 1,000 cusecs in the evening which helped the floodwater recede.
The subway below Harris bridge on the Pune-Mumbai highway and railway bridge in neighbouring Bopodi was closed for vehicular traffic.
Pavana river too was swollen following good rainfall in the upstream areas. The water flowed over the bund at Ravet while the Kejudevi temple in Thergaon was inundated. Water entered a large part of the Moraya Gosavi temple in Chinchwadgaon, submerging the bund near Dhaneshwar bridge.

The overflowing nullah near Shankar temple along the Pune-Mumbai highway in Kasarwadi was inundated, breaking the road link to Kasarwadi village, Pimple Gurav and Sangvi.
Y K Chowgule, section engineer at Pavana dam project, said, "The dam is 88% full. There was 31 mm rainfall in the catchment areas of Pavana dam today till 5 pm. The total rainfall in this season till today is 1,579 mm."
The state irrigation department releases water at the rate of 1,200 cusecs from the dam for power generation which is also used for supplying drinking water to Talegaon, Dehu Road, Pimpri Chinchwad city and 40 villages downstream. "We have started releasing 1,350 cusecs water from the dam for power generation since Tuesday morning," Chowgule said.
