Even as Punjab government has invited applications from government school teachers for the state award to be conferred on Teachers’ Day (September 5), ironically only four teachers from Doaba region — Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr and Kapurthala districts — have sent their applications. And among them there is not a single teacher from primary section.
There are over 15,000 teachers in government schools —primary, elementary, high and senior secondary — in Doaba region. The state government has asked the eligible teachers to submit their applications to the Directorate through concerned District Education Officers (DEOs), after getting it checked from district selection committee till July 7.
Academic performance, including subject results, welfare activities in connection with education, social awareness about education etc, are the criteria for sending applications for the state award. “Here teachers are hardly eligible for such awards because of consistently poor results of large number of teachers,” said a senior education officer.
DEO Nawanshahr Kulwant Singh (both secondary and elementary) said that from their district only one teacher, Bakhshish, of Government Middle School Kahlon had sent his case and it was forwarded to the Education Department Chandigarh. He said: “There is no limit on the applications that can be sent, but we received only one.”
Similarly DEO Hoshiarpur Sukhwinder Kaur said that in their district one female teacher from Government Senior Secondary School Pathial has sent her case.
From Jalandhar, Principal Ajit Singh of Government Senior Secondary School Jandiala has sent his application, while Principal Jagtar of Nangal Majha School in Phagwara, Kapurthala, has also applied.
