GHMC cracks down on structures using cellar space for commercial purposes in various parts of city

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Tuesday demolished 29 buildings, including one pertaining to a private school while continuing its drive in demolishing under construction illegal buildings at Ayyappa Society in Madhapur.

In addition to the 61 under construction buildings that were identified for demolition, authorities on Tuesday identified another 20 illegal buildings in the society. One G+1 under construction building of Meridian School was demolished on the Shilparamam road, said GHMC chief city planner G.V. Raghu.

Few buildings that were demolished on Tuesday were built for both residential and commercial purposes. Portions of seven buildings of seven floors each that were built for commercial purpose on the YSR Statue road were also demolished.

“The drive would be continued for a few more days and all under construction buildings in the society would be pulled down,” said Mr. Raghu.

There was disruption when local Corporator Jagadishwar Goud and other local leaders tried to stop the demolition works. Authorities and leaders entered into heated arguments over demolition of buildings.

A resident, Prakash Rao, is reported to have developed health complications when authorities razed down his building near Shilaparam road in the afternoon. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

In all, authorities demolished slabs, pillars and walls of 29 buildings till late in the evening. It may be recalled that 32 under construction buildings were demolished on Monday.

Meanwhile, GHMC authorities launched demolition of structures that violated parking rules and constructed shops in cellars and stilt floors at Dilsukhnagar, Uppal, Habsiguda, Sultan Bazar, Basheerbagh, Begumpet and other localities.

In all, 15 buildings that used cellar space for constructing shops, godowns and other purposes were demolished and restored for parking. While, some owners constructed shops in cellars, Tirumala Music Centre used the cellar space at its outlet in Begumpet to store stocks. Likewise, the complex housing Bottles and Chimney constructed rooms in the cellar space. Authorities demolished the structures and restored the cellar space for parking, said a press release.

Authorities further informed that during five-day drive that commenced on July 26 to remove encroachments on footpaths, over 3900 bunks, 7000 temporary sheds, 2160 pushcarts and 13075 platforms and pucca structures were demolished and cleared.
