Abrahams set for Panathinaikos trials

TEENAGER Shaquille Abrahams is set for a trial with top Greek club Panathinaikos in the coming weeks.

Abrahams, who has come through the development setup of Ajax Cape Town but is now on the books of FC Cape Town, is hoping to become the third South African to join Panathinaikos after Nasief Morris and Bryce Moon.

The 17-year-old winger helped the Urban Warriors claim the prestigious Engen Knockout junior tournament last year, a side that was captained by Rivaldo Coetzee who later broke into the Ajax first team, but now plays for African Beasts.

Abrahams, who plays on the left-hand side of the midfield, but can also operate as a striker, has already been to trials with SuperSport United that were not successful, but could make the switch to Greece instead.

Panathinaikos have been running "soccer schools" in Cape Town for some time and have earmarked Abrahams as a potential talent for their junior teams.

The last SA player to feature in the top flight in Greece was Bongani Khumalo, who was on loan at PAOK from Tottenham Hotspur in the 2012-13 season.
