SPURLING, VIRGINIA CATHERINE currently of Albuquerque, New Mexico passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at the age of 94 and half years. She was born December 10, 1919 in Evansville, Indiana. Virginia moved with her husband Willard, now deceased, to Albuquerque in May 2004 to be near their daughter and her family. Virginia and Willard spent all of their lives until the move to the Indianapolis and Greenwood areas. Virginia had 33 years of a wonderful career at Eli Lilly & Company where she made many lifelong friends. She was a longtime member of the Indianapolis Eastern Star. After retirement she spent the next 23 years volunteering one or two days each week at St Francis Hospital and during her spare time at home made blankets for the premature babies at the hospital. With some of her many friends from Eli Lilly, she also spent time golfing, bowling on a team, and many evenings playing cards. Through the years she became a skilled seamstress, a gifted craft maker, and developed a great love for cooking. She especially loved sharing her cooking talents with her co-workers, neighbors and family whom she often entertained. Her cooking and baking skills were shared so often with her grateful co-workers that they presented her with a framed certificate, designating her the recipient of the "The Julia Child Award". She was so proud of the certificate that it hung on her wall throughout her time in Albuquerque. She lived in an independent retirement home for ten years where she became known as the "candy lady", making candy to share with all the staff and residents for holidays and special occasions. In her final days she was cared for by the loving staff of Brookdale Place and hospice care. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Kay Fox and her husband Gary; two granddaughters, Erica Stell and her husband Von of Albuquerque and Gwendolyn Hyder and her husband Perry of Phoenix and four great grandchildren. The Hvder's great grandson is Jackson "Jack". The Stell great-grandchildren include Daniel, Adam and Rachel Catherine. Virginia was very proud because her only great granddaughter was named after her, being given her middle name, Catherine. She loved to attend Rachel Catherine's ballet classes. A private family graveside service will be held at the Veterans National Cemetery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She will be buried with her husband, Willard. Memorial contributions may be made in Virginia's name to your favorite charity. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW., ABQ, N M (505-343-8008).
