Major rivers in Shimoga district — Tunga, Bhadra, Sharavati and Varada — were in spate on Friday owing to continued downpour.
Vehicular movement between Shimoga and Tirthahalli on the National Highway 13 was suspended for the second consecutive day on Friday, as the road near Mandagadde remained inundated. The nests in Mandagadde bird sanctuary were washed away by the swirling water of Tunga river. Water was discharged at the rate of 72,586 cusecs from the Tunga reservoir, as a result of which eight houses in low-lying Wadi-e-Huda locality in Shimoga were flooded.
Varada river was flowing above the danger mark in Sagar taluk. Paddy cultivated in more than 1,100 acres of land near Beesanagadde village was inundated. Vehicular movement along the Shimoga-Bhadravati stretch of National Highway 206 was disrupted for more than two hours as a tree had fallen on the road. A bridge constructed across Ingalada rivulet in Tirthahalli taluk was washed away. The district administration declared holiday for schools and colleges on Friday owing to incessant rain.
Water-level in Linganamakki reservoir has increased by four feet in the last 24 hours, owing to heavy rain in catchment areas. The water-level in the reservoir was 1,799 ft. on Friday against the full reservoir level of 1,819 ft. The inflow was at the rate of 85,526 cusecs.
The water-level in Bhadra reservoir has increased by three feet in the last 24 hours. The water level in the reservoir was 179 ft. on Friday, against the optimum level of 186 ft. Inflow was at the rate of 40,000 cusecs there.
