The essence of all the 18 Indian Puranas have been included in the 19 murals that have gone beyond the framework of Kerala mural art.

‘18 Puranangal,’ an exhibition of murals by Athira Sajith, was inaugurated by writer Khadeeja Mumtaz at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi Art Gallery here on Thursday. The paintings are in fact illustrations for a book of the same title to be published by the DC Books soon.

Each of the 18 Puranas has been represented by a painting that depicts the essence of them.

The ‘Padma Purana’ has been depicted by a painting of ‘Ananthashayanam’ and the ‘Koorma Purana’ by ‘Sagara Madhanam.’ While ‘Krishna Leela’ represents ‘Brahmavaivartha Purana,’ ‘Skanda Mahatmayam’ represents ‘Skanda Puranam’ and ‘Sooryopasana’ represents ‘Bhavishya Purana.’

A painting of ‘Mahishasura Mardhini’ represents the ‘Markandeya Purana’ while one of ‘Agnidevan’ depicts the essence of ‘Agni Purana.’ ‘Garuda Purana’ is represented by ‘Mokshakandam’ and ‘Linga Purana’ is depicted through ‘Srishti Sthithi Samharam.’ The ‘Swargarohana’ of Sree Krishna represents ‘Vishnu Purana’ while a painting of ‘Varaha with Bhoomi Devi’ represents the ‘Varaha Purana.’ ‘Vamanavatharam’ for ‘Vamanapurana,’ ‘Matsyavatharam’ for ‘Matsya Purana,’ ‘Bhageerathi’ for ‘Naradeeya Purana,’ ‘Bhagavatham’ for ‘Bhagavathapurana,’ ‘Srishti’ for ‘Brahmanda Purana,’ ‘Jagannathan’ for ‘Brahma Purana’ and ‘Shivoham’ for ‘Vayu Purana’ are the other paintings. ‘Naimisharanyam’ is also depicted in a painting.
