Marsh underwent surgery on the ligament in his elbow on Tuesday and a statement from Cricket Australia physiotherapist Alex Koutouris set the 31-year-old's expected recovery period at a maximum of fourth months.

That would see Marsh return at the start of December, with the plan to ease him back into the playing arena via the state competition, before a potential return for the Boxing Day Test against India.

"Shaun had surgery on his left elbow to reconstruct the ligament and the surgeon has reported that everything went well," Koutouris said.

"He will now wear a brace for a period of time and will then commence rehabilitation on the joint, which is anticipated will take approximately three to four months to recover.

"We believe having the surgery now will still allow him time to recover and play for Western Australia and with the view of him being fit and available for Australian duty again mid-summer."

Marsh last featured for Australia on their tour of South Africa in February, notching a century in Pretoria before a pair of ducks in Port Elizabeth.
