SURAT: A father and son duo was electrocuted outside their house at Khwaja Nagar near Mandarwaja area of the city on Thursday. They were declared dead when brought to New Civil Hospital here.
Aziz Hanif Maniyar alias Babu Chappalwala, 45, and his son Zuber, 22, died outside their house in Khwaja Nagar slums. Aziz was electrocuted while climbing down from an iron staircase.
Zuber tried to pull him upstairs but was electrocuted too.
Locals said the entire area was waterlogged because of heavy rains on Thursday. "The level of water had risen up to the electricity box installed nearby. Electricity must have passed through the water to the iron staircase electrocuting the two," alleged Aslam Cyclewala, Congress spokesperson, who was present at the spot.
He claimed a road alongside Koyli rivulet opposite Khwaja Nagar was recently constructed and its level had gone up compared to the slums. "Earlier the water used to flow into the rivulet. But now the water takes a long time to recede. It has only two narrow pipes to pass through. A proper inquiry should be carried out and the responsibility fixed with regard to these two deaths," said Cyclewala.
"Preliminary examination has established that the reason for the death of the two persons is electrocution. Police are yet to investigate the matter," said P N Patel, police inspector, Khatodara police station.
