BUENOS AIRES – Argentina NBA star guard Manu Ginobili has been refused permission to play at the FIBA World Cup by the San Antonio Spurs, the Argentine basketball federation (CABB) claimed Thursday, July 30 (Friday PH time).
The CABB said the defending NBA champion Spurs had activated a clause in an agreement which exists between the NBA and the international basketball federation (FIBA) which governs international call-ups.
According to this clause NBA players are not authorized to play for their national teams when there is a risk of compounding an injury.
The 37-year-old Ginobili played through a stress fracture in his right leg during the team’s run to a fifth NBA title this season – the same problem he suffered in 2009. Argentina’s national basketball team doctor Diego Grippo had said that MRIs and ultrasounds on his leg were inconclusive but that “results were good.”
The Spurs believe that the veteran player will not be fit enough to feature in the world championships which take place in Spain from August 30 until September 14.
Ginobili’s exclusion from Argentina will be a big hit to the number three FIBA ranked team, which will play in Group B alongside Gilas Pilipinas. The two teams are scheduled to clash on September 1 in Sevilla, Spain. – Rappler.com
