Illustrated Torah portion exhibit comes to the J

The Deutser Art Gallery at the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Commuity Center of Houston, 5601 S. Braeswood Blvd., will host “Scriptures in Pictures: The D’rash Design Project,” by Christina Mattison, Friday, Aug 15, to Tuesday, Oct 21. The exhibit is an ongoing visual study and exploration of Jewish scriptures that uses art as a means of interpretation, expression and learning.

Mattison, a convert to Judaism, began the project as a means of continuing to teach herself about her new-found religion after conversion. She set out to create an original piece of artwork each week, based on the corresponding Torah portion, Haftarah portion or Jewish holiday, with a brief written description accompanying each piece. Having started The D’rash Design Project in March 2012, she currently has amassed more than 75 D’rash Designs in the collection, and has completed various privately commissioned pieces inspired by the project.

Mattison works in mixed traditional and digital media, starting each piece by hand with drawing, painting and/or collage and compiling the various elements into a layered digital image. Her pieces often have vibrant color schemes and a modern, graffiti-esque vibe. Originally from Maryland, she currently lives in Galveston, Texas, with her husband, Rabbi Marshal Klaven of Congregation B’nai Israel.

An opening reception with Mattison, which is free and open to the public, will be held on Sunday, Aug 24, from 5-6 p.m. at the Evelyn Rubenstein JCC. The reception takes place between the Yom Kippur afternoon of Adult Learning and the David Krohn music concert; both programs will be held at the J.
