A Spanish illustrator has come up with a novel way to encourage the legions of new Sherlock Holmes fans created by BBC Sherlock and other major franchises to pick up the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. James Malacuso has recreated all the illustrations in Lego bricks.

When Conan Doyle's stories were first published in the Strand magazine they were illustrated by stunning pictures from Sidney Paget. Malacuso has intricately recreated each of the scenes, including the iconic 221b Baker Street with Lego figures and the fans love the effect. Reflecting the changing nature of publishing, the project is being promoted on Pubslush, the new specialist crowdfunding platform for books.

Steve Emecz from MX Publishing, who are releasing the stories, comments “There has never been a better time to be a Sherlock Holmes fan. With more franchises running concurrently then any time in history – BBC Sherlock, CBS Elementary, the Guy Ritchie movies and now the Russian Series there are millions of new fans all over the world. What's important though is to get as many of these new fans to go back and read the original stories as possible. James' illustrations are a wonderful way to do that for children”.

Roger Johnson from The Sherlock Holmes Society of London says that the photos, inspired by Paget's illustrations and the Granada TV series are "Different, clever and rather charming.”. Amanda Barbara Vice President of Pubslush adds “It will allow its fans to engage with the stories like never before.”

LEGO is going through a similarly prolific resurgence at the moment with the LEGO movie recently released on DVD and a huge success at the cinema. According to IMDB off a budget of $60m the movie took $69m in its first weekend and as at 18th July had taken $257m at the box office. Great business for Warner Brothers who are also behind the Sherlock Holmes movies – there's already talk of a sequel.

The first three books are available from all good bookstores and the new books (October, November, December) will be released in the autumn and fans can get involved in the project on Pubslush.

About Pubslush
Founded by mother and daughter entrepreneurs, Hellen and Amanda Barbara, Pubslush is a global crowdfunding and analytics platform for the literary world. Our founders were inspired to create a more democratic publishing process after learning about the struggles of authors like J.K. Rowling, whose bestselling series was rejected by the 12 publishers to which it was initially sent. So many great authors have been dismissed to the infamous "slush pile." Our name is derived from our mission to give authors the opportunity to get out of the slush pile, prove their talent and market viability, and successfully publish quality books.
