A thick cloud cover over the city and peripheral areas may translate into light rains and Chennai will continue to experience cooler than normal weather till Friday.
An upper air circulation over Bay of Bengal that is tilting southwards had brought in dark patches of clouds over the city on Wednesday.
The day temperature that was hovering two degrees above normal on Tuesday dipped to 33.5 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam and 35.3 degree Celsius in Meenambakkam, because of the weather system.
Meteorologists of Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said though the system is likely to bring more rains to Andhra Pradesh, Chennai and its suburbs would also enjoy light rains.
“Convective activity that occurs after a period of intense heat is another reason for the murky sky. It need not be necessarily hot on a particular day for rain clouds to develop,” said an official.
The onset of sea breeze is also a favourable factor for the development of thunderstorms.
While overnight light showers had rendered a few interior roads slushy on Wednesday, the drop in temperature came as a relief to residents.
S. Velayudham, a weather blogger, said the upper air circulation may turn into a low pressure area and cross the Odisha coast on Thursday.
Since June 1, the Nungambakkam weather observatory has received 165.9 mm of rainfall, with a deficit of 5.3 mm, whereas Meenambakkam has recorded 231.3 mm, which is 36 mm more than the average received during this period.
However, officials of the meteorological department and bloggers say, normally, Chennai receives more rains in August and September.
