Take health, environmental, and economic concerns into account

Your editorial opposing GMO labeling misses the mark in a few ways (“GMO labeling bill lacks a scientific justification”).

First, it suggests that the proper sequence should be to let genetically modified organisms proliferate, and then regulate only after they are proven to be harmful. Try applying that reverse-thinking to the pharmaceutical industry and see where we would be.

Second, it fails to consider other reasons to be informed about GMO foods, such as concerns about the risks of putting untested engineered organisms into the environment. In addition, there are economic concerns that farmers are placed at the mercy of agri-tech firms that own the patents on the GMO seeds, and there have been court cases dealing with inadvertent cross-pollination and other trappings for the unwary farmer.

For the sake of personal health, environmental, and economic concerns, consumers should have the right to know, and the right to choose, whether they are buying products with GMO ingredients.
