Salman Rushdie is an ‘expert’ comic book fan

Page Six was surprised to see literary lion Salman Rushdie prowling the premiere of the Marvel movie “Guardians of the Galaxy,” but it turns out Rushdie’s reading extends to the superhero canon.

“I grew up in Bombay, in India, and the local bookstore had great stacks of DC and Marvel comics,” the “Midnight’s Children” author told us at the Cinema Society screening at the Crosby Street Hotel.

“I’m a kind of expert,” he admitted, adding, “Not these days — because the heroes are different and new — but the old guys, Superman and Batman, I know a lot.”

Rushdie also gave us some astute analysis of today’s ubiquitous hero franchises, saying, “We’re all so used to special effects now that it just depends if it’s witty and fun.”

Rushdie, who since his breakup with Padma Lakshmi has been linked to beauties including Topaz Page-Green, said Superman’s his favorite hero because he wears “his underpants over his clothes.”

Meanwhile, Chris Pratt, who lost 80 pounds to star in “Guardians,” said the first thing he ate when he went off his extreme diet for the role was “pancakes.”
