RANCHI: A drive down the Bahu Bazar lane or the Karbala road in the state capital can turn out to be a nightmarish experience for the travellers any time of the day.
Dotted with potholes and craters, the thoroughfares not just reduce a vehicle's shock absorbing capacity, but also posses a threat to one's life.
Add to that, people are most likely to get a back ache or neck pain, especially when travelling in a public transport.

A first year student of XISS, Clayburn Calvert said, "The traffic system here seems to be completely dysfunctional, and the road craters make it all the more pitiable."
The stretch from RIMS Bariatu to Booty More is filled with cracks and open man holes, posing severe difficulties for the two-wheeler riders. The monsoons have increased the problems as the riders fail to figure out the depth of the holes, when they are filled with rain water.
When it comes to health implications, doctors say regular journeying on potholed roads can lead to problems like arthritis. Rheumatologist at Apollo Hospital, Dr Deonis Xess said, "A continuous drive of 25 minutes over cracked roads and craters can lead to severe backache, neck pain and slip disk."

If the pothole is very deep and someone falls into it suddenly, then this sudden jerk can have serious effects on their nervous system, he added.
The protruded iron rods from the dividers on the main road, invite trouble for the riders, if they are not cautious enough, and provide a sure possibility for brutal accidents.
The increased number of vehicles on these narrow streets has clearly augmented road congestion, making it more prone to accidents with the street side hawkers adding up to the anguish, as they take up a portion of the road to set up their stalls.
The statistical data of the number of road accidents portray a clear indication of the devastated road situation of the city.
Jharkhand is enlisted as one of the major accident prone state in the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
According to the recent NCRB report, Jharkhand accounts for 15% of the total accidental deaths in the country.
Violation of traffic signals adds up the rising agony, with the traffic police not always present on the traffic posts, making it difficult for the vehicle drivers to spot these traffic signals.
