Look beyond routine careers

Studying in India
Last Updated 30 July 2014, 15:31 IST

Dear Sir,

I have completed my 10 std this year with 7.8 cgpa, Though I am a very hard working student and started studying from the first day I have scored a grade that is very less for my hard work and effort I have never done last minute preparation. I have scored 7 cgpa in social and got 8 cgpa in all the other subjects, my cgpa is quite down just because of social. I have got my admission in an integrated school. I have taken PCMC and will be doing CET and want to know what all courses I can pursue after my 2nd PUC except engineering and BCA. People say that there is no more scope for computer science I am just worried because I am not interested to go into commerce stream or into biology and there is no option of taking electronics at my college. I have no other option except taking computer science and I love studying science.Varshita Makam
Dear VarshitaIt is sad that despite so much of regular studies, you are unable to score well.  Now that you have opted for science, your poor results in Social Studies is a thing of the past, and you can concentrate on doing well in PUC. Since you have not taken biology, you are clear that you are not going to take up medicine or life sciences.  Between Computer Science and Electronics as your 4th elective, it really does not matter, because what you study at PUC level is only a foundation, and you can pick up other subjects or skills later. If you are not interested in engineering, then you should re-think why you wish to take coaching for CET.  There are innumerable options in science beyond BE or BCA.  Some of them are: pure sciences, astrophysics, Applied Mathematics, Architecture or design, etc. You can also aim for careers such as management, civil services, marketing, chartered accountancy, mass communication, law etc.  Try to narrow down your interests based on your competencies and not on what people say about ‘scope’. If unable to decide despite your best efforts, this would be the right time for you to seek an aptitude test and career guidance.
Dear Sir,I am very much interested in joining Indian Air force, flying branch after my BE. I have read that they will consider marks from 1 to 6 sem where aggregate should be min 60% to join as officer. But in my 1st 2 years I have aggregate of 52% and have a ur back ll attend classes from August. I have heard that only last 2 years of my course will be considered for my degree as am a VTU student. So, will I be able to fulfill my dream if I can apply by showing degree marks card of last 2 years and try to work hard in my upcoming years. I have A grade in C certificate in air force will this helpPooja Anand
Dear Pooja,It is true that entry into the flying branch of Indian Air Force is highly competitive, and more so for girls as the intake is very limited. They do consider your academic record throughout your course, regardless of which university you pass out from.  However, if you have a C Certificate in NCC, that would be an advantage.  It will be good if you can visit the nearest Air Force Recruiting Office and discuss with an official in charge there about your prospects – because there are many other conditions such as height and weight, eyesight, physical fitness, psychological testing etc, which will determine your getting selected.  Best of luck !
Dear Sir,I completed my BCA this year (2014) with first class. I have plans for higher studies. But I want to do my MCA in correspondence. doing education in correspondence have scope?A student
Dear Student,A correspondence degree is rated the same as one where you have attended college, as far as government, UGC and other authorities are concerned.  But employers would prefer a regular candidate because he has had more practical exposure by attending classes. However, a correspondence student can be in greater demand if during the three years of his MCA he has acquired work experience in the same or related area, and has a good track record.  If you can ensure that you can get a suitable job and simultaneously study well on your own, there is nothing wrong in enrolling for MCA through distance learning.
Dear Sir,I am a 2nd year computer science student. I am really enthusiastic about studying courses that combine hardware (mechanics) with software like robotics. Is such a course suitable for me? What are the courses to be done and colleges offering such a course? Also educate me on the variety of the branches of my interest.Vishnu Raghunath
Dear VishnuIts nice to know that you are looking beyond the routine careers available to a computer science student. Since you have time before taking a final decision, start exploring the field of artificial intelligence, which is growing rapidly and offers challenging careers. It involves both hardware and software knowledge, and will provide you with opportunities to develop new products. Basic studies in mechanical, mecha-tronics, computer science etc. can lead you to specialization, which is offered in most reputed institutions including IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc, BITS etc.
Dear Sir,I have done B Com. I am currently unemployed and have no prior job experience. If I set up a computer at home with an internet connection, can I earn money doing any BPOs’ work at home?  Ranjan
Dear Ranjan,There is no guarantee of an assured income with a computer at home. Unfortunately many private operators have been duping people of late asking them to buy software or give deposits. Others have found that after days of hard work, their payment does not come. Be very careful when selecting outsourced work and make sure the organisation is genuine.
Dear Sir,I have written SSLC exams. I intend to study engineering. My parents suggest I study commerce. What scope do engineering students have in future.Abhishek, Bangalore
Dear Abhishek, Engineering and commerce are two different fields. Check out whether your aptitude is more technical or commercial and take a decision based on your skills and talent in either course. Engineering students definitely have an excellent future because many of them use engineering as a base to get into managerial and higher level careers.
Dear Sir,I will complete my 12th standard board exams next year. I am particularly interested in the defence services or a computer related career. I have written my NDA exam but I am not too confident about clearing it. If I don’t clear it this time I am thinking of doing automobile engineering or BCA. How can I pursue these career options? What is the scope of these fields in our country.Vivek
Dear Vivek,One should never make career choices as wide as defence, engineering, BCA etc. Every field has scope provided you are good at it. Focus on one are
