Former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton endorsed former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown (R) on Wednesday in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat from New Hampshire.

"Formerly a colonel in the Army National Guard with a distinguished record, Scott Brown knows how to lead and he believes in an America that is respected at home and abroad," Bolton said in a statement. "He is the type of public servant who isn't afraid to be independent and make bold decisions for the state of New Hampshire."

Brown tweeted that he felt "honored" by the endorsement:

Bolton formed a PAC and super PAC in March 2013 and has supported various Republican U.S. House and Senate candidates.

Brown received endorsements from other high-profile political figures, such as former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) and 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Brown was also endorsed by Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), even though he has publicly criticized policies that she supports.

Bolton, a foreign policy hawk, has made it no secret that he is leaving the door open to a 2016 presidential run.

HuffPost Pollster has Brown trailing his Democratic challenger, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), ahead of the November general election:
