Thousands inundate Yogya tourist sites during holiday

Thousands of tourists flooded tourist sites in Yogyakarta province beginning on Tuesday, the second day of Idul Fitri.

Gembira Loka Zoo president director A. Tirtodiprojo said that around 20,000 visitors from Central Java, including Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Magelang and Purworejo, visited to the zoo on Tuesday. He acknowledged that a majority of the tourists were visiting the zoo to see the new penguins and predicted that the number of visitors would remain high through the end of the weekend.

Other hotspots in Yogyakarta, including the Kraton, Malioboro street, the nearby town of Kaliurang and several beaches in Gunungkidul and Bantul regencies, also experienced spikes in visitors.

Yogyakarta Tourism Agency head Bambang Legowo said that the agency would stage a number of performances, such as traditional dances and band performances to entertain the visitors.

"There will be more than 30 art performances held in different locations over the weekend," he said.

Bambang estimated that around 300,000 tourists visited the beaches in Bantul regency during the Idul Fitri holiday.

Indrayanti and Baron beaches in Gunungkidul were also packed with tourists, creating traffic congestion since Tuesday afternoon. (fss/dic)
