50 Villages Marooned in Thane after Heavy Rain

Nearly 50 villages in Thane district have been cut-off from tehsil headquarters due to torrential rain.

Thane: Nearly 50 villages in Thane district in the state have been cut-off from the tehsil headquarters and two bridges remained submerged as heavy rain continued to lash today.

Villagers from Murbad and Palghar talukas are being shifted to safer places, disaster control room officer Jaideep Visave said.

The worst hit areas are Palghar, Vasai, Dahanu and Vikramgadh, Mr Visave said.

He added that nearly 24 people, who were stranded amidst torrential rain in a resort at Manor in Palghar taluka, were rescued last evening.

The rain has also taken a toll on two bridges - the Maswan bridge on the Palghar-Manor road and the bridge between Murbad and Rahta which have submerged.

Many people in the Badlapur township of western Thane have been rendered homeless due to flooding, Mr Visave said.

Police and fire officials were rushed to Badlapur last night to carry out rescue operations.

The rain also claimed a casualty yesterday as a teenage boy drowned in New Shivaji Nagar lake at Kalwa where he had gone for a swim along with his friends, a civic official said.
