Heavy rains lashed Saurashtra coast from Bhavnagar to Gir-Somnath districts on Tuesday afternoon even as Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy rainfall in the region in the next 48 hours until Thursday evening.

RAJKOT: Heavy rains lashed Saurashtra coast from Bhavnagar to Gir-Somnath districts on Tuesday afternoon even as Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heavy rainfall in the region in the next 48 hours until Thursday evening.
Bhavnagar received 112mm of rainfall. It was followed by Talaja which got 65mm, Mahuva 69mm, Palitana 45mm and Ghogha 32mm of rainfall, district flood control room officials said.
Major rainfall in Gir-Somnath district was recorded at Kodinar. It received 30mm of rainfall and was followed by Mangrol which got 25mm rainfall.
"Heavy to very heavy rains would occur at isolated places all over Saurashtra and in the Union territory of Diu,'' an IMD official said.
Rains in the past 10 days have changed the picture in the scarcity-hit areas of Kutch and Saurashtra. Many dams in Saurashtra have received good inflow. Narmada water resources department officials said dams in Saurashtra were now 20.14 per cent full with water.
Meanwhile, sowing operations have begun but it was yet to gather speed in Saurashtra. Agricultural department sources said sowing was over in 23.70 lakh hectare area out of 36.14 lakh hectare in Saurashtra.
