All positions in the Zanu-PF Women’s League are up for grabs at the conference set for next month save for the Secretary for Women’s Affairs who is appointed by the President at congress.The Women’s League, which is set for an elective conference from 20 to 22 August, endorsed the appointment of First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe as its secretary last week.
Candidates are likely to jostle for the deputy secretary position, which is currently held by Cde Eunice Sandi Moyo.

The deputy secretary of the Women’s League is an automatic member of the Politburo, which is the party’s highest decision-making organ between congresses.

In an interview yesterday, Zanu-PF Women’s League spokesperson Cde Monica Mutsvangwa said preparations for the conference were progressing well. She said all positions would be contested.

Cde Mutsvangwa said each province would forward a maximum of four candidates to the national election directorate for consideration in line with the party’s rules and regulations.

The approved candidates would battle for the 33 positions in the Women’s League excluding the chairperson position. “This is an elective conference and effectively all positions will be contested,” she said. “Every province will bring names of four candidates after elections in their respective provinces that would be considered for positions in the Women’s League.

“Right now we are not focusing on who will occupy which position but the election of eligible candidates in the provinces.”

Some of the positions that constitute the Women’s League include secretaries for administration, finance, commissariat, security and external affairs, among others.

Cde Mutsvangwa said according to the party’s rules and regulations, aspiring candidates should have served at least 15 consecutive years in the party.

The same regulation applies to those seeking to be Central Committee members.

Cde Mutsvangwa said the Women’s League provincial elections were likely to be held next week.

Meanwhile, Zanu-PF’s election directorate on Monday approved candidates seeking to stand for various positions at the party’s Youth League conference.

The election directorate disqualified a few others after failing to meet the party’s rules and regulations.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo said the names of the approved candidates would be announced after today’s Politburo meeting.
