NEW DELHI, July 29:
Muslims in the national capital today celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr by offering prayers at mosques, exchanging greetings and gifts and taking part in feasts with friends and family.
Hundreds of faithful dressed in their festive best turned up at historic Jama Masjid, Fathepuri Masjid, Hazrat Nizamuddin and other mosques in the city to offer special prayers on the festival marking the culmination of holy fasting month of Ramzan.
Soon after the ‘namaz’ was over at the mosques, people hugged each other and wished “Eid Mubarak”, exchanged gifts and enjoyed special dishes, particularly ‘sewayian’ made of vermicelli and different varieties of biryani and kebabs.
Elders gave ‘eidee’ (token money) to children. People visited relatives and gave out alms to the needy.
Markets in various Muslim-dominated areas in the city have been decked up on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the most joyous days in the Islamic calendar.
Delhi Police have strengthened security in an around the mosques.
President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.
In his message on the eve of the festival, the President said, “I extend warm greetings and good wishes to all fellow citizens, particularly to my Muslim brothers and sisters in India and abroad.”
Modi hoped that the festival will strengthen the bond of peace, unity and brotherhood in the country.
“Greetings on Eid-ul-Fitr. May this auspicious day strengthen the bond of peace, unity & brotherhood across our Nation,” the Prime Minister said in his message.
Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung too greeted people on the festival. “May the Almighty grant his choicest blessings to all the citizens of our great Nation.”
Ramzan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed as a fasting period by Muslims who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and it culminates in Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations.
Meanwhile, Eid-ul-Fitr was today celebrated in a pleasant
atmosphere in Ghaziabad. The devouts offered ‘namaz’ at the Eidgahs and mosques, asking for peace and harmony across the nation.
Namaz was first offered at 6 AM at a Masjid situated in Chaman Colony.
Subsequently, it was offered at 7:45 AM in Shahidnagar’s Sulemani Masjid, at 8:00 AM in Vijayanagar’s Madarsa Faridiya, and at 8:30 AM in Morta and Niwari Masjid.
The District Magistrate, Senior Superintendent of Police and official delegates were also present to congratulate people on the festival.
On this occasion, heavy police was deployed outside Eidgahs and mosques. During the time of namaz, some of the routes were also diverted to ensure that the devouts do not face any problem.
