Tom Sykes broke the track record at Misano to claim pole position for Sunday's World Superbike races in Italy.
The Briton, riding the factory Kawasaki, got the better of Ducati's Davide Giugliano and the Aprilia of Sylvain Guintol in a tense finale to Superpole.
It proved to be just as close in the final session as it had been in practice, when the top 11 riders were separated by less than a second.
The top 10 seeds from combined free practice were joined by Toni Elias and Niccolo Canepa from Superpole 1, with Elias' lap of 1:35.961 the quickest of the weekend until it was obliterated during the final session.
And it was Sykes who came out on top in the late charge for pole, bettering Troy Corser's previous record with a lap of 1:34.883 to beat Giugliano by a couple of tenths.
Guintoli rounded off the front row with Loris Baz, Marco Melandri and Elias securing spots on the second row.
Britain and Ireland dominated row three with Chaz Davies qualifying seventh ahead of Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty,
