Fugitive slain in gun fight with NYC police wanted in Calif.

NEW YORK, July 29 (UPI) -- The fugitive who died in a shootout with police in New York's Greenwich Village had been on the run for two years from a California child sex charge.

Charles Mozdir, 32, was killed Monday, after he was featured on CNN's The Hunt With John Walsh. Sources told the New York Post his girlfriend saw the show, recognized him and called police.

Investigators were able to use Mozdir's cellphone number to track him to Smoking Culture NYC, the head shop where he worked in the Village.

Police said that Mozdir, armed with a handgun, wounded New York Police Detective Mario Muniz and two federal marshals, Pat Lin and Ryan Westfield. Mozdir was killed when police returned fire.

Michael Brandow, who lives in an apartment above the Slaughtered Lamb pub, said he heard the commotion, including police ordering people to "get off the street."

"I thought it was a movie or NYPD Blue, '' he told the Post. "It kinda made me sick when I realized it wasn't a TV show."

Mozdir disappeared after he was charged in June 2012 with molesting a friend's son in Coronado, Calif., authorities said. His car was found in Darien, Ga., with its license plates removed.
