Former champion Robin Haase suffered a shock exit to Paolo Lorenzi in the first round of the ATP Kitzbuhel tournament on Tuesday.

The Dutchman, who won the event in Austria in 2011 and 2012, went out 6-2 6-3 in 71 minutes.

The sixth seed was broken early in both sets by the Italian and - following a rain interruption – could not break back to prevent his exit.

An upset also looked on the cards for last year's finalist Juan Monaco when he lost the first set 6-0 against Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev.

However, the Argentine upped his game and won the next two sets 6-2 6-1 to set up a second round clash with seventh seed Jarkko Nieminen, who beat Russia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-4 6-4.

Belgium’s David Goffin will next face top seed Philipp Kohlschreiber after the wildcard beat France’s Kenny De Schepper 6-2 6-4.
