Man Stabs Dog To Death To Serve For Dinner: Cops

Owner Kills Family Dog And Planned To Eat It: Police

A New Mexico man allegedly killed his dog with a screwdriver so he could serve it to his family for dinner.

Salvador Martinez, 46, allegedly told investigators he butchered Onyx, a 9-month-old Chihuahua and Dachshund mix, because he couldn't feed his family, KRQE reports. However, his girlfriend told authorities they weren't short on food.

Deputies were called to Martinez's home in Edgewood on July 18 after reports of "some weird behavior," Torrance County Sheriff Heath White told the station.

Deputies found the dog's body in the freezer, according to KHON 2. Martinez's girlfriend said he had stabbed the pup in the heart with a screwdriver, skinned the body and tossed it in the freezer before researching dog recipes online.

Officials say that Martinez's grandchildren were in the home while Martinez killed the dog and that they were aware of what he did to the pet.

It's legal to eat dog meat in New Mexico, White told Fox 29, but fatally stabbing a dog is not.

Martinez is charged with extreme animal cruelty as well as child abuse.
