Want to know the secrets of successful desert gardening? The Valley Permaculture Alliance hosts a two-hour class on native and native-adapted plants on Saturday, Aug. 2, in Tempe. Learn about cactus and succulent species plus many sun-loving bloomers that add dramatic texture, subtle fragrance and fanciful color to any garden. Other topics covered include container gardening and native vegetables. Instructor Vynnie McDaniels will provide a list of top plants for gardening in the Southwest.

The class starts at 9 a.m. in the Tempe Transportation Center's Don Cassano Community Room. Cost is $15 in advance or $18 at the door. Prepaid admission for two adults is $25 or $30 at the door. Children age 14 and younger can attend with an adult for free.
