A recent survey of Germany's largest IT industry association BITKOM said on Monday that nearly two-thirds of the smartphone users regard smartphones as essential.

According to the survey, some 61 percent of all smartphone owners surveyed said that they can not give up smartphones entirely.

"The smartphone quickly becomes the most important companion in professional and private life," said BITKOM chief executive Bernhard Rohleder.

As the survey showed, only 5 percent of users can "easily" give up their smartphones, while 16 percent said "somewhat" and 18 percent said "rather not".

According to current data of BITKOM, smartphones are now used more often than conventional phones in Germany.

Currently, 55 percent of all German citizens aged over 14 years use at least occasionally a smartphone, and the figure was only 41 percent a year ago.

Besides, 52 percent of the German population use a classic mobile phone now and then.

The survey also showed that smartphones are especially popular among young people, as 84 percent of 12 to 13-year-olds have such a device, while among 16 to 18-year-olds, the ratio is even 88 percent. Enditem
