Telefonica Launches First Spanish-Language MOOC Platform

Telefonica and Banco Santander have partnered on the worldwide launch of what is being billed as the world's first Spanish-language massive open online course (MOOC) platform, MiriadaX. It is also the second-largest MOOC platform in the world, according to information released by the companies.

In active use for about a year and a half, MiriadaX has approximately 750,000 registered users, 100,000 of whom have already passed a course. In that time, the platform has hosted 153 courses in Spanish and Portuguese from 33 Ibero-American universities and has amassed a community of 990 professors.

"This is a historic opportunity for the Ibero-American higher education system,"Emilio Botin, chairmen of Banco Santander said, in a prepared statement.  "MiriadaX has all the tools necessary to become the world's leading open online course platform in Spanish and Portuguese."
