'Get rid of review system,' urges Vengsarkar

Sachin Tendulkar too has expressed his disapproval of the system a few months ago.

Mumbai: Former India captain and chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar wants the International Cricket Council to immediately dump the controversial umpires review system which was put on trial in four Test series so far.

“I support Sachin Tendulkar. They (ICC) should get rid of it. It’s not fool-proof and I will leave it to the umpires to give a decision,” the former middle order batsman said today after unveiling the ICC World Twenty20 Cup.

The results of the trials by the ICC, in which the batting and fielding sides are given a specific number of chances to challenge an on-field umpire’s decision who then refers it to the TV umpire, are to come up for review at the ICC’s Cricket Committee meeting in London.

Tendulkar, a few months ago, expressed himself against it as he felt the hot-spot technology, adopted by some companies producing TV coverage of cricket matches, looked a better bet than the one used by ICC to decide on challenges made against umpiring decisions by players in some Test rubbers.

Vengsarkar said he was not in a position to comment on the plan to introduce day-night Tests, which too is to be discussed at the ICC Cricket Committee meeting, unless more is known about how they planned to do so.

“I do not know (presently) how they would go about it and cannot offer any comment now,” he said.
