KORAPUT: Maoists allegedly killed a tribal, suspecting him to be a police informer, at Dasini village in Koraput district late on Saturday. He was identified as Kamana Kadraka, 53. The village under Bandhugaon block is situated along Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border.
Police sources said around 12 armed Maoists barged into Kadraka's house at midnight. They dragged him out of the house and locked his wife inside.
He was found lying in a pool of blood a few metres away from the village on Sunday. The rebels had slit his throat.
A Maoist letter signed by Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zone Committee secretary Daya was recovered from the spot. The letter in Telugu accused Kadraka of being a police informer and supporting landlords in the area.
Police said Kadraka was a former member of Maoist-backed Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangh. "Kadraka never helped police in anti-Maoist operations. The reason behind the murder is being investigated," said SP (Koraput) Awinash Kumar. On Friday, Maoists killed two persons, including a village headman, in Malkangiri district on similar charges.
With a day to go for Martyrs' Week observed from July 28 to August 3 by Maoists, posters, seeking people's support, were found at Pottangi, Ampaballi and Nandapur in the district. The rebels erect Martyr pillars during the week to pay homage to cadres killed in police firing. "Security has been tightened for the Martyrs Week with focus on border areas. All vehicles entering the district are being checked," the SP said.
