The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM)is urging residents of Jacks Hill to remain alert even as firefighters battle a major bush fire in the community.

The fire is also affecting the communities of Tavestock, Ivor, Cassia Ridge and Westphalia.

ODPEM is warning members of the public to avoid the areas unless absolutely necessary.

Already, one house has been destroyed in the blaze.

According to the ODPEM, constant vigilance is being maintained as windy conditions pose a threat of further spread.

The ODPEM says the fire is being fought by units from the Kingston and St Andrew region of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, with additional resources from the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and the National Water Commission.

Fire precautions:

* Ensure that cigarettes are completely put out before disposal

* Avoid lighting fires in open spaces

* Keep matches and naked flames out of the reach of children.

* Please call the nearest Jamaica Fire Brigade location immediately to report any fire in your area
