Both teams sent out strong squads — Leicester City were led by keeper Kasper Schmeichel, while Everton were captained by Leon Osman.

Within two minutes, Gareth Barry had a chance for Everton but his long shot sailed over the crossbar.

Everton had another chance when Leicester City's Liam Moore fouled Osman just outside the penalty area, only for Schmeichel to save Luke Garbutt's powerful attempt on goal.

Leicester City began to create chances of their own, new recruit Marc Albrighton having his shot cleared by the Everton defence.

Leicester's David Nugent also had a couple of chances, but he fired wide and then, in the 37th minute, he volleyed the ball into the net but was flagged for being offside. The Foxes continued to threaten in the minutes before half-time but the teams went into the break still locked at 0-0.

In the second half, Leicester looked more likely to break the deadlock. Jamie Vardy repeatedly tested Everton's defence and also had a goal disallowed for being offside. But then, in the 65th minute, his pass released Taylor-Fletcher, who used his heel to put the Foxes ahead.

Vardy could have extended the lead in the 70th minute but was denied by Everton's defence. Equally, Matthew Kennedy missed a chance to equalise when he shot high, allowing the Foxes to emerge with victory.
