School dropout makes a mark in Millennium City
GURGAON: Gurgaon is not only one of the best cities to live and work in India but provides excellent career avenues even to people from economically backward classes.
Take for instance, Karan Sharma, who has recently been awarded with the 'Best Entrepreneur' in Delhi/NCR title by the ministry of rural development.
Born and brought up in Rewari, Karan, a school dropout, today runs two manufacturing units in the city and has launched his own brand of submersible pumps, thanks to the training and exposure he got in Gurgaon.
Not only he earns Rs 12,000 everyday, he has also given employment to 10 people.
"My father passed away when I was just four and my mother a homemaker. When I was 15, there was a lot of pressure on me to earn money. I therefore couldn't pursue my studies after 10th standard. One day when I came to know about a 30-day free-of-cost training at an institute in Gurgaon, I moved to the city. The city has given me both education and opportunities to achieve success," he said.
Talking about an innovation in the field of submersible pump repairing, he said: "There is a huge demand of submersible pump repairing in the city. Repairing such a pump is a regular need of many hardware shops in Old Gurgaon. Rather than repairing an old submersible pump, I offered people to provide replacement of old submersible pump with a new one. That was how I started pump manufacturing."
After his training in introductory mechanics, Karan worked in a workshop to gain practical exposure. "His dedication and hard work led to his immense success," said Lalchand, the director of Rudset, the institute which provides free-of-cost training in many vocational courses.
Karan, who runs his two manufacturing units in Laxman Vihar, is now planning to set up a factory in Patuadi. "I have bought a 200 square yard plot in Patuadi and want to launch my dream project there," he said.
He has an advice to budding entrepreneurs. "Gurgaon has got everything a businessman needs — high purchasing power and growing demand in every possible field. However, one needs to establish a name in the market, which is possible only through dedication, smart work, timely delivery and good marketing skills," he said.
