Hemant Nimbalkar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Bangalore, has said the police will act as per the law against miscreants and persons inciting violence with regard to the issue of the signboard at Yellur in Belgaum.

Mr. Nimbalkar, a Marathi speaker, who was Superintendent of Police of Belgaum a few years ago, has been deputed to help the district administration and police authorities here restore law and order, in the wake of violence by Marathi-speaking workers and the lathi-charge by police on Sunday.

After speaking to senior police officials, Mr. Nimbalkar went to Yellur village in the afternoon. He inspected the damage allegedly caused by the police during the lathi-charge, including damage to doors and windows of some houses. While hearing complaints from the residents, a youth said that some policemen entered his house when he was working on a laptop, which was snatched and broken. A woman complained that her two-month-old baby was hit by a stone.

Later, Mr. Nimbalkar addressed the residents, appealed for peace and urged them not to believe rumours. He made it clear that the police was there to uphold law and order and that he would stay in Belgaum until the situation returned to normality.
