A ‘Kavad yatra’ was taken out by devotees of Lord Shiva under the aegis of Marawari Yuva Manch from the temple of Lord Shiva at Madhavadhara to the Panduranga Swamy temple at Pandurangapuram near Ramakrishna Beach on Sunday.

The procession passed through Muralinagar, Kancharapalem, Thatichetlapalem, Railway New Colony, Diamond Park, Dwaraka Nagar, RTC Complex, Sampath Vinayaka temple and Siripuram. The devotees carried holy water from the water fall (Madhavadhara) in kavads (water pots).

The water pots are suspended from the ends of a long bamboo pole and carried on the shoulders and the Kavad-carrying pilgrims are called ‘Kanvaris’.

The custom of carrying Kavad started in the Treta Yuga. Lord Rama had carried the holy water of the Ganga from Sultanganj in a Kavad and offered it to Lord Shiva at Babadham. The prayers this year were for the betterment of mankind and for rain and development of Andhra Pradesh , he said.
