Maruti Suzuki to ramp up Celerio AMT production

Automakers have to maintain an ideal balance between good sales and optimal production, and failing in either can be disheartening for any company. So after gauging the sales performance of its newest hatchback offering Celerio, Maruti Suzuki is looking to increase the production of the AMT variant to  reduce the waiting period. 

The Celerio was launched in the Indian market earlier in February and till now, the car has received over 57,800 bookings, out of which, 25,000 bookings are for the AMT variant with the automated manual gearbox technology. That’s an impressive 43 per cent share in the hatchback’s total bookings. 

Currently, the waiting period for the Celerio AMT variant stands at about four months. To reduce this waiting period, Maruti Suzuki has reportedly increased monthly production of the model from 4,500 units to 6,500 units. According to a Maruti spokesperson, the company has delivered 7,000 units of the Celerio AMT and 22,000 units of the regular manual gearbox-equipped variant so far. 

The AMT technology for the Celerio is sourced from Italy’s auto component giant Magneti Marelli, which plans to shift its AMT production line to Maruti Suzuki’s supplier park at the Manesar facility within year or so. This, then, will further boost the vehicle’s production process and also bring down the waiting period.
