SMC gathers 400 tons of garbage on first day of cleanliness drive

SURAT: In a cleanliness campaign undertaken by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), 400 tons of waste and garbage was gathered on the first day. The workers also removed 271 encroachments and issued notices to 17 Pay & use toilet contractors.
On the first day of two day campaign, named Mahatma Gandhi Cleanliness campaign, workers collected 400 tons of garbage. Nearly 2,000 strong staff of SMC removed public encroachments from 271 places of different parts of the city.Officials also repaired 2374 sq meters of footpath, cleaned 554 storm water drain inlet chambers, checked 615 light poles and 26 pay & use toilets. 17 contractors were issued notices for dirt and garbage in toilets.
During this cleanliness drive, garbage was removed from 24 open government plots and during the checking of shops and hand carts seized 102 kg of prohibited plastic.
We also checked 167 hotels and destroyed stale and inedible food stuff up to 116 kg.
" On the first day of the campaign, 276 institutes were given notices and we collected spot fine of Rs 5.15 lakh. We also solved on the spot 99 complaints of people sent to us," said an official from Central zone.
This campaign will continue on the Sunday too in which all top officials of SMC will participate.
