The border crossing at Coutts has reopened to travellers after it was shut down so the Canadian Border Services Agency could deal with a serious incident.

The closure was initiated after a suspicious package was delivered to the CBSA at Coutts, Alberta.

Officials isolated the packeage and shut down the crossing on both sides of the border.

Members of the Lethbridge Bomb Disposal Unit were at the facility and set up a road block about 15 km north of the border near Milk River.

Travellers were rerouted to the port of Del Bonita during the closure.

The crossing was reopened just after 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

There is no word on what the package contained but officials say it did not contain explosives.
