The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) have started a special drive to check overcharging and passenger overloading by transporters as people are travelling to their hometowns for Eid.
NHMP Inspector General Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema has directed all the traffic wardens to fine public transporters who are overcharging the passengers and retrieve the excess amount, said a press release.
NHMP officials in the North Zone (Peshawar to Lahore) of GT Road took action against 122 lawbreakers and made them return the excess amounts, totalling over Rs100,000, back to passengers. The traffic wardens imposed fines on more than 200 public transport vehicles in Kamra, Taxila, Gujar Khan, Dina and Jhelum.
Overall, NHMP officers on the Motorway imposed fines on 235 public transporters and made them return the overcharged amount of Rs214,230 to passengers.
The police have increased their patrolling in the run-up to Eid. Road safety pamphlets are being distributed at all toll plazas.
SSPs and DIGs are supervising special patrolling in their respective jurisdictions. The NHMP chief has also asked all offices to provide instant help to commuters in distress.
The traffic police have made plans to regulate traffic and clear traffic jams on Eid days.
